About Me

My name is Heather Akins, PT, DPT. I am the founder of Rooted In Wellness Pelvic Health and have been a physical therapist for 14 years, specializing in orthopedics and pelvic health. I am a proud wife and mom of two active girls,  served 12 years in the Army National Guard and am passionate about fitness. My diverse background and dedication to wellness drives my commitment to helping others achieve optimal health.

I believe wellness is a journey, not a destination. Throughout my life, wellness has taken on different forms, but a commitment to movement has always been a constant. I thought being fit meant I was prepared for every challenge, but my birth experience was far from what I had envisioned. Postpartum, I found myself navigating pain, anxiety, and bowel and bladder incontinence—all while adjusting to life as a new mom. It was overwhelming, and my personal wellness took a back seat. While I don't get it right every day (we're all perfectly imperfect), this journey ultimately led me to my passion and specialty in pelvic health.

My mission is to provide my clients with the healing and supportive environment they need to be their perfectly-imperfect selves.  I work to empower you to feel confident and strong in the body you are in and guide you along your own journey to wellness.

As a Pelvic Health Physical Therapist, I specialize in supporting my clients at every stage of life. Whether you're navigating the physical demands of pregnancy, postpartum, or managing the transitions of menopause, I am here to help you achieve your personal and fitness goals and enhance your well-being.

Let's work together to ensure you feel strong, confident, and empowered on your journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take insurance?
I do not bill insurance directly, but many clients use their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for visits. I’m also happy to provide a superbill, which is a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider if you have out-of-network benefits. Visits are offered at a flat rate with no surprise charges or back-end billing. This model allows for transparent pricing and more personalized, uninterrupted care. Flexible care plans are available to fit your budget and needs.

What does a typical care plan look like?
All care plans begin with a 90-minute comprehensive evaluation followed by 60-minute follow-up sessions. On average, clients are seen for 3 to 5 visits, typically scheduled every 2–3 weeks. This frequency allows time to implement changes while still maintaining momentum in your progress. You'll also have direct access to me between visits for questions or concerns. If more than five visits are needed, discounted rates are available to help support continued care.

What does an evaluation include?
Your initial evaluation includes a thorough health history, a detailed conversation about your goals, and an individualized physical assessment. I treat the whole person, taking into account physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors. True wellness involves the entire body and nervous system, and your evaluation reflects this whole-body approach. Together, we’ll create a plan that feels supportive and sustainable for you.

What happens when skilled care is complete?
Healing isn’t linear, and wellness is a lifelong journey. Once you've made meaningful progress and feel confident in your movement and body, you’ll have the option to continue care through our wellness model. These sessions are perfect for “tune-ups,” check-ins, or ongoing support to maintain your progress and prevent setbacks. You’ll always have a space here to return to when needed.
